Five-Paragraph Essays

Most essays are written in the five-paragraph style with an introduction, three paragraphs for the body, and the conclusion. The introduction discusses the thesis of the essay with three main points mentioned. A good five-paragraph essay will have a hook to capture the reader. The topic sentences of the body mention each of the three main points. The final paragraph will be the conclusion and will summarize the essay with the thesis.

The five-paragraph essay is a form of written argument that is very often required in school assignments. Despite its small size and creative nature, it has rather standard structure. Most essays are written in the five-paragraph style with an introduction, three paragraphs for the body, and the conclusion.

The introduction discusses the main thesis of the essay, giving a thematic overview of the topic. A good introduction is like a "grabber", or narrative hook that captures the reader. Then it will settle, but in the end once again be heard in the conclusions. It also briefly and clearly defines all concepts contained in the statement of the theme. It is important to understand that any concepts are meaningful within the framework of specific theory. In other words, introduction covers not just the thesis, but gives more general picture of the chosen topic.

The body or the main part contains three arguments supporting the expressed thesis. These arguments are clearly defined and explained. There are given opinions, justifying each argument. Each semantic unit of a five-paragraph essay expresses and justifies one main idea. If necessary (for example, in economics, sociology), there can be used formulas, charts and other visual elements, clarifying the essence of chosen idea. The body necessarily explains all symbols, letters, formulas, and their meaning. It shows how the common patterns or formulas become specific pattern or formula needed for supporting the thesis. It usually gives short clear examples from the "real world" and provides vivid short quotations, with a precise indication of the author and source. The first paragraph of the body usually presents a review of the background literature in order to orient the reader to the chosen topic. The second paragraph of the body usually contains evidence and all arguments in favor of the thesis. It is always precise and concise, as it identifies the main points. The last paragraph of the main part may contain the evidence and arguments against the thesis if necessary.

The final paragraph of the essay is the conclusion that summarizes the essay with the thesis. It briefly specifies main points of the essay, drawing logical conclusion. It does not repeat what was already mentioned, but expresses ideas in other words, supporting the thoughts that were really justified in the body. It may have a brief summery of the practical significance of conducted research. Conclusion summarizes up points and restates thesis of the five-paragraph essay.
